Best-bets for Aug. 20: historic dramas, in fact and fiction

1) “761st Tank Battalion: The Original Black Panthers,” 8 p.m., History. Tonight is filled with pioneering Black military units. Reruns tell of the Tuskegee Airmen (7 p.m.), Buffalo Soldiers (10:03) and Civil War heroes (11:05). This new film, produced by Morgan Freeman (shown here), tells of the unit that trained for two years, then was sent to Europe shortly after D-Day. It fought in the Battle of the Bulge and its men won 11 Silver Stars and a Medal of Honor. Read more…

2) “The Winter King” and “San Francisco Sounds” openers, 9 and 10 p.m., MGM+. First is a fresh take on the King Arthur tale. In this 10-parter, he’s the illegitimate some of King Uther, who banished him; now Merlin finds him. Then is a documentary about ‘60s music soaring from San Francisco bands, including The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother & the Holding Company.

3) “Billions,” 8 p.m,, Showtime, rerunning at 10. This hour overflows with obsession. Mike Prince, having grabbed Axe’s company, is obsessed with being president. Key people at the company want to stop him – but want help from Axe … who fled the country to avoid prosecution,. And Chuck Rhoades is obsessed with getting back his old federal attorney job. As usual, the hour bristles with sharp dialog, some of which real people can understand,

4) More cable. HBO continues the second season of its its Magic-and-the-Lakers series at 9 p.m., followed by the mid-section of its three-week “Telemarketers” documentary at 10. Showtime continues “The Chi” at 9. And AMC has the fourth episode of its taut, six-week “Dark Winds” season. Intent on catching the killer, Joe Leaphorn takes a huge risk; to help him, his deputy defies orders.

5) “America’s Got Talent,” 9-11 p.m., NBC. With the live portions finally starting Tuesday, this repeats the special that looks at what has happened so far. That rerun goes against new episodes from 8-10 p.m. on CBS (“Big Brother” and “The Challenge: USA”) and ABC (“Celebrity Family Feud” and “The $100,000 Pyramid”) and 8-9:30 p.m. on CW (“The Chosen”).
