2) More returns, CBS. At 8:30, “Ghosts” finds “the others” — spirits from one ghost’s past; also, Patience wants a serious relationship with Trevor. At 9, a “Matlock” case transforms when the client is seized by ICE agents.

3) “Animal Control,” 9 p.m., Fox. With his nemesis on the verge of an honor, Frank has a desperate plan: Steal the glory by rescuing 24 animals in 24 hours. After a slow start, there are some great moments. That’s followed by a “Going Dutch,” with two stories — a lame one involving the colonel and a fun one involving his daughter, the captain.

4) “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette,” 9 p.m., FX, rerunning at 10:10. “We can’t we just love each other?” Kennedy asks. “Why does it have to be so hard?” Good questions, with no easy answers. This hour (the fifth of nine) has some extreme highs and lows, ending with a beautifully layered scene, perfectly played by Sarah Pidgeon.

5) MORE: Now that the Olympics have ended, the Thursday dramas are back to new episodes. It’s NBC’s two “Law & Order” shows and “The Hunting Party” against ABC’s two “9-1-1” shows and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Also, Turner Classic Movies has two superbly acted films — “On the Waterfront” at 6 p.m. ET and “Roman Holiday” at 8.
