As networks drift away from scripted shows, here are morsels of good news:
“Sullivans’s Crossing” (shown here) will be back with a new season in April on CW. And the AspireTV channel is preparing its first scripted show. Details are:
— After canceling all of its scripted shows, the new CW owners replaced them with sports and with lower-cost, unscripted ones.
Still, they’ve kept the occasional exceptions, via Canadian co-productions. Lately, that’s included “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent,” “Wild
Cards” and “Sullivan’s Crossing.”
Now “Sullivan’s” is returning for a 10-episode fourth season. That will be on Mondays (current the “Wild Cards” night), starting April 20.
When last season ended, Maggie (Morgan Kohan), once a Boston surgeon, had decided to settle into life with Cal (Chad Michael Murray), a former lawyer, at the resort her dad created. That will soon be disrupted.
— Aspire is a cable network created by Magic Johnson in 2012. Johnson sold it to the UpTV people in 2019, but the emphasis remains on lifestyle shows aimed at Black viewers.
Some of those shows have focused on life at historically black colleges and universities. Now Aspire’s first new, scripted show will be set at a fictional HBCU.
“Savannah State of Mind,” coming later this year, will focus on seven freshmen. Bentley Kyle Evans — who was a producer of “Martin” and “The Jamie Foxx Show” — will be in charge.
