1) “Maigret” season-opener, 9 p.m., PBS. Spotting a troubled young woman. Maigret (shown here) is propelled into a twisty mystery. There’s one flaw: The show takes to extremes the cliche of officials insisting there’s no case here. Still, this is a smart, intense story; it has a final jolt tonight, then concludes next week.
2) “The Gold” season-opener, 10 p.m., PBS. For four weeks, this slot went to “Trespasses,” with Tom Cullen excellent as a heroic lawyer; now Cullen triumphs in an opposite role. He’s a scheming salesman, probed by a relentless Scotland Yard guy (Hugh Bonneville), seeking the rest of the money from a gold heist. It’s a true-crime story, perfectly played.
3) “The Simpsons,” 8 p.m., Fox. We’re a week away from “Treehouse of Horror,” a Halloween tradition that spins three offbeat stories. But first, there’s this semi-related episode, “The Revengening,” with a slasher loose. That’s followed by “Animal Control,” with Frank probing Roman’s privatized animal-control company.
4) “Tracker,” 9 p.m. (or later, with football overrun), CBS. In a deserted Texas town, Colter searches for a woman who vanished after an argument with her husband. That’s preceded by “Marshals”: Relations between locals and the government crumble, after a military drone is shot down.
5) ALSO: Another solid mystery show returns, with “Professor T” at 8 p.m. on PBS. Also, sports seasons are overlapping — football all day (concluding with Cowboys-Packers, at 8:15 ET on NBC) and baseball on Fox Sports 1. The latter is the sixth game (if needed) of the Dodgers-Brewers playoffs.
