1) “The ’90s Boy Band Boom,” 8-10 pm., CW. As the ’90s began, A.J. McLean said, pop music was ignored. “It was grunge or rap.” His group (Backstreet Boys, shown here) sputtered in the U.S., but soared in Europe; it has sold130 million records. Amid attacks — one rocker called them “the spawn of Satan”– boy bands thrived, as this lively film shows.
2) “Resident Alien,” 10 p.m., USA and Syfy, rerunning at 11:02. Last week’s hour (rerunning at 12:04 a.m. on USA) had hilarious moments, as D’Arcy tried to break into an animal shelter. Harry adjusted to being a mere human … then vanished. Now he faces the Galactic Housing Council.
3) “The Great American Recipe” opener, 9 p.m., PBS. Gathered are home cooks ranging from Cajun and Southern Black traditions to Afghan, Thai, Filipino and more. It’s all pleasant, but repetitious. You’d almost welcome an occasional Gordon Ramsay curse word.
4) “Fire Country,” 8-11 p.m., CBS. This seems to happen a lot: A family fishing ttip (8 p.m.) and a risk-assessment job (10) are interrupted when daring rescues are needed. Less common: At a Renaissance Fair (9) p.m., a fire-eater’s act goes very badly.
5) “Dexter: Resurrection,” Paramount+. Almost killed by his son, the former serial killer ducks cops and more in New York City. Also streaming today are documentaries on the Idaho college murders (Amazon Prime) and endangered species (“The Wild Ones,” Apple TV+). On Thursday, Netflix debuted Lena Dunham’s “Too Much.”
