For those of us still trying to discern the difference between Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, this will be a tough Emmy season.
Both are nominated for best actor in a comedy series. Their shows — both on Apple TV+ — are both up for best comedy.
Rogen’s “The Studio” (shown here) is one of the year’s hot newcomers, with 23 nominations. It trails only “Severance” (also Apple), with 27, and another newcomer, Netflix’s “The Penguin,” with 24. HBO Max’s “White Lotus also has 23; its “The Last of Us” has 16.
The best-comedy nominees — going against “Studio” and Segel’s “Shrinking” — are “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Business,” “What We Do in the Shadows” and “The Bear” … nominated for last summer’s episodes, not the current ones.
The drama nominees — in addition to “Severance,” “White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” — are “Andor,” “The Diplomat,” Paradise,” “The Pitt” and “Slow Horses.”
The nominations were announced today (July 15) and the telecast will be Sept. 14 on CBS, hosted by Nate Bergatze — who has a nomination for his Netflix special, not his CBS one.
As usual in recent years, CBS and other broadcast networks are mostly ignored in the top categories. Exceptions included ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” (six nominations, including best comedy) and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” which has seven — plus 12 more for its anniversary special.
