Here’s new turf for a TV crossover — a mystery that spans three decades.

“NCIS: Origins” (shown here), which usually follows “NCIS,” this time will air first. The show follows Gibbs’ early years, starting in 1991; he’ll face a mystery … that will then be tackled by the “NCIS” crew, in modern times.
That was one of several moves announced by CBS. Others include:
— Tracy Morgan will have his own comedy on Paramount+ … and will launch it with a guest shot on CBS. In “Crutch,” he plays Frank Crutchfield, a Harlem shop owner whose highbrow son and free-spirited daughter move back home. The character will guest on “The Neighborhood” on Nov. 3, the same day the entire, eight-episode “Crutch” season is on Paramount+.
— Annaleigh Ashford will be the suspect on this year’s Halloween episode of “Elsbeth.” Ashford is a Broadway favorite, with a Tony award and two more nominations; she also starred in CBS’ “B Positive.” Last year’s Halloween episode was one of the show’s best; it began when a young woman woke up with a tattoo, a bad haircut and the possibility that she’d killed someone.
— “The Road” will take extra steps to promote itself. The competition (starting Oct. 19) has emerging country singers touring with Keith Urban and being his opening act. Blake Shelton is a producer, Gretchen Wilson is the “road manager” and now more stars are added as mentors — Jordan Davis, Dustin Lynch, Karen Fairchild (of Little Big Town) and the Brothers Osbourne. Also, the tour bus will go on a separate tour so fans can visit it.
— And the MTV Video Music Awards (8 p.m. ET Sunday on CBS, MTV and Paramount+) is adding a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who died in July at 66. It will include Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, plus Yungblud and Nuno Bettencourt. The show also has special awards for Mariah Carey (performing at the VMA’s for the first time in 20 years) and Ricky Martin.
