1) “Murder in a Small Town,” 8 p.m. Tuesday, Fox. As a wedding nears, people on both sides — wealthy bride, blue-collar groom — fume. Something bad may be looming; then again, the series title tells us that. What follows is typical of this show — layered characters and smart plot twists, navigated by a deeply human police chief. The lone out-of-sync element is the new mayor (Marcia Gay Harden), shown in last week’s episode, confronting the librarian (Kristin Kreuk).
2) “The Hard Hat Riot,” 9-10:30 p.m., PBS. In 1970, fierce forces collided in Manhattan. There were student protesters, who hated the Vietnam War, and blue-collar workers, who didn’t. It was loud and brutal. This talks to people on both sides and paints the historic background. It’s skillfully done … and one of the final films (for now) by a unit shelved by budget cuts.
3) “On Brand With Jimmy Kimmel” debut, 10 p.m., NBC. “The Apprentice” was at its best when contestants created quick marketing campaigns. Now that’s the whole show: They pitch ito Dunkin’ tonight and Southwest Airlines at 8 p.m. Friday. There are two more Tuesday hours and four more Fridays.
4) “The Lowdown,” 9 p.m., FX, rerunning at 10:05. This feisty series keeps putting Lee (Ethan Hawke) alongside great characters. But one of the best is Lee’s own daughter. Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 15, has done lots of horror films (including the lead in the “Firestarter” reboot). Here, she’s subtly perfect, absorbing the madness of her dad’s world.
5) “NCIS: Origins,” 10 p.m., CBS. This reruns the season-finale, complete with its closing jolt. Gibbs is being investigated for murder — a prickly matter because he did it and some others know it. As seen through Cecelia (known as Lala), his steely colleague, it’s a gripping hour.
ALSO: It’s opening day of the baseball play-offs. ESPN has Tigers-Guardians at 1 p.m. ET, Red Sox-Yankees at 6 and Reds-Dodgers at 9; ABC has Padres-Cubs at 3. It will be the same on Wednesday and (if needed in a best-of-three) Thursday.
