Best-bets for Jan. 13: strong night for fact and fiction

1) “Best Medicine,” 8 p.m., Fox. In the opener, villagers met Dr. Martin Best. They promptly dubbed him “Doc Martin” … and promptly decided they don’t like him. As a diligent doctor (shown here) with no people skills, he’s hard to like … especially tonight, when he cancel the monthly black-bean supper. 2) “Doc,” 9 p.m., Fox. This well-crafted show often pulls viewers through dark stories; now it has three of them, each involving siblings. An orphaned teen tries to care for her younger brother … a brother and sister suspect their father was poisoned … and life is closing in on Hannah, the doctor who linked with her brother in an effort to destroy Amy.

3) “Pole to Pole With Will Smith,” 10 p.m.=, National Geographic, then on Hulu and Disney+. Smith has previously dome some brilliantly crafted series for Nat Geo; now he goes to extremes: In seven weekly episodes, he goes ro both poles and in-between. In this opener, he skis to the South Pole, climbs an ice cliff and visits a remote research station.

4) “Harlan Coben’s Final Twist,” 8 p.m., CBS. After airing exactly one episode of this true-crime series, CBS has shifted its plan. Now new hours are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, nudging “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins” to 9 and 10 p.m. and bumping “NCIS: Sydney”; they rerun at 10 p.m. Wednesdays. Tonight, a successful businesswoman is found slain.

5) ALSO: At 8 p.m., ABC’s “Will Trent” continues last week’s story, with the team desperately search for Will after an attack. Also at 8, PBS “Finding Your Roots” traces the families of Wiz Khalifa and Sanaa Lathan; it finds brutal biases, both in the South and the North.
