“The Great American Road Rally: Celebrity Edition” will start May 13 on the CW network. It will continue on Wednesdays and conclude on July 22 — two-and-a-half weeks after the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on Independence.
This won’t be a race, with fast-and-furious cars smashing speed limits. Instead, the 10 cars — each aligned with a charitable cause — will pause in different towns, for fundraising and awareness events. Still pending are:
— The celebrities. But the host will be Ian Ziering, a car buff who’s known for “Beverly Hills 90210” and the six “Sharknado” movies.
— The towns. But it will be basically along Route 66, celebrating its 100th birthday. That route opened in 1926, covering a 2,450-mile stretch, from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean, at Santa Monica, Cal. “Route 66” has been the title of a hit song and a TV series; the route has been featured in everything from “Grapes of Wrath” to the “Cars” cartoons.
