Grogu and friends bring a sci-fi spurt to streaming

The Disney+ people plan to stuff autumn with fantasy and science-fiction,
That starts Sept. 2, with the Mandalorian movie (shown here). It will be followed by series with Vision (Oct. 14), Percy Jackson (Nov. 20) and Ahsoka (Jan. 20).
All will be on the streaming channel, which already has one season of “Ahsoka,” two of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and three of “The Mandalorian,” plus the “WandaVision” series and its spin-off.
Also, work has started on “Kingdom Hearts,” an anime series for both Disney+ and the Disney Channel.
Those updates came this weekend at “D23,” a fan gathering created by Disney. Details include:
— Sept. 2: “The Mandalorian and Grogu” launched the summer movie season, with Pedro Pascal continuing his role as a galactic bounty hunter. It drew modest approval from critics (compared to the raves for the series) and modest success at the box office ($345 million globally).
Now it reaches Disney+, with a bonus: Arriving that day is a Lego movie that summarizes the three seasons with comedy twists.
— Oct. 14: “VisionQuest” wraps up what Disney calls a trilogy of mini-series.
The 2021 “WandaVision” found Vision (an android) thinking he was in a sitcom-style New Jersey life. The 2024 “Agatha All Along” followed a witch who escaped from that Jersey illusion. Now this returns to Vision (Paul Bettany), going through worlds in search of his identity.
— Nov. 20: The first season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” met Percy as a 12-year-old, startled to learn he’s a demigod, the son of Poseidon.
That was in December of 2023, with the second season arriving two years later. Now the pace has picked up, with only an 11-month gap.
This one — Annabeth has been taken and a “great prophesy” looms — is based on the third book … which, unlike the first two, wasn’t included in the two Percy Jackson movies that were made before Disney took over.
— Jan. 20: “Ahsoka” has Rosario Dawson as the former Jedi, grasping for a way to stop the endless wars.
— Also, “Kingdom Hearts” will arrive later, based on a videogame series.
