ABC plans a country cascade

For one long, busy evening, TV will break out of its summer slumber.
That’s when ABC has its annual “CMA Fest” concert. Over three hours (8-11 p.m. June 26), it will have 30 songs from country stars, from Adkins and Aldean to Zach Top and Zimmerman.
There will be serious moments (Scotty McCreery singing “Five More Minutes,” for instance), but there will also be Trace Adkins (shown here) singing “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” Country music is like that. Read more…

Surprise: This monarchy wraps up neatly

“Monarch” ends its first (and, maybe, only) season with a surprise – a semi-sensible conclusion.
That’s the one thing we never expected. Until now, the show has kept piling up odd, soap-style twists. But then comes the season-finale, at 9:02 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 6) on Fox. If the show isn’t renewed, fans will have had a fairly satisfying farewell.
And no, we weren’t expecting that. Until now, “Monarch” (shown here with Trace Adkins) was like that crazy uncle who sometimes visits – weird, senseless, but fun in his own, goofy way. Read more…

Memorial concert scrambles in the year of COVID

As the virus shut down large chunks of life, Michael Colbert was sure of two things.
Yes, there would still be Memorial Day, even without some of the parades and picnics and such.
And the night before that, there would be the annual “National Memorial Day Concert” (shown here from a previous year); that’s at 8 and 9:30 p.m. May 24 on most PBS stations. “We need to have our rituals,” Colbert said. Read more…
