Best-bets for Jan. 3: “Magnum” ends, “Family” starts

1) “Magnum P.I.” finale, 9 and 10 p.m., NBC. This often juggles opposites — a sleek crime tale and a clumsy drama. That’s true in the first hour, with a clever crime scheme sharing time with a flat phone-hotline story. But the second hour (shown here) handles personal stories briskly and focuses on the crime. With one flaw – this guy was foolish to hire Magnum – it’s a winner, a good way to end the series. Read more…

2) “FBI True,” 10 p.m., CBS. Back in 1993, the government heard reports that weapons were being stockpiled in the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas. An attempt to serve warrants led to a gun battle; six Davidians and four federal agents were killed. What followed was a 51-day stand-off and then a raid and a fire of disputed origin, with 76 more deaths. The story’s retold here.

3) “We Are Family” debut, 9 p.m., Fox. While we wait for “Masked Singer” to return on March 6, this fills the void pleasantly enough. The singer onstage is related to someone famous … who joins (shielded) for a duet. Clues — painfully obvious, for the second star – pop up. Anthony Anderson hosts, with some helpful humor from his mother.

4) “Family Law” season-opener, 9 p.m., CW. Most Canadian shows let us settle back and root for the protagonist. Not tonight. Fueled by anger, Abby is shaky when dealing with a court case … or with her parents’ revived relationship … or in alternating being at home with the kids. It’s a sub-part episode in a usually solid show.

5) ALSO: As the post-strike dramas get ready, TV remains into games. ABC has basketball (Bulls-Knicks) at 8:30 p.m. ET and CBS has “The Price is Right” and “Raid the Cage” at 8 and 9. And at 8 p.m., Fox has the season-opener of “I Can See Your Voice,” with Lauren Alaina, DeRay Davis and NikkiGlaser joining Cheryl Hines and Adrienne Bailon-Houghton.
