1) “Best of VMAs: Iconic Vanguard Performances,” 9:30 p.m., CBS. In 1984, the Video Music Awards started the Video Vanguard Award. Early ones went to the Beatles, David Bowie (shown here) and Michael Jackson; lately, eight in a row have gone to women … a string that will be broken Sept. 27, when Nirvana is honored. First, here are past performances by Vanguard winners.
2) “60 Minutes,” 7:30 p.m., CBS. In past years, this would have been big — the first broadcast-network show to open its season. But in those years, “60 Minutes” was a deeply respected news show. That was shattered in the off-season, when outside forces drained many of its people and all of its respect.
3) “The Walking Dead: Dead City” season-finale, 9 p.m., AMC, rerunning at 10:12. Dillard (brilliantly played by Jimmi Simpson) has been an enigma. Now a brief flashback shows he was far crazier than we’d imagined. Then the problem: Dillard has the guns, the thugs and his old police uniform. This ending is way too prolonged, but still packs an impact.
4) “The Floor,” 8 p.m. ET, Fox (but 5 and 8 p.m. PT). Each of the 100 people is a champion of something — from puzzles to barbecues, from “The Voice” to “Amazing Race.” But as usual, there are some wildly misplaced people in the first rounds. The extreme comes when the “K-Pop” category is played by two people who know virtually no K-poppers.
5) ALSO: “Sunday Night Football” opens its season at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC, with the Cowboys (7-9-1 last season) and Giants (4-13). And “Marlow Murder Club” wraps a solid, two-part mystery. That’s 8 p.m. on PBS, followed by the second of six parts to “Marble Hall Murders,” ending (in the novel-within-the-story) with an explosive will-reading.
