Best-bets for Sept. 19: Here’s CBS’ future and past

1) CBS fall preview, 9 p.m., CBS. This is the one place that has much to preview. The other three big networks, combined, have only four new shows (only one of them scripted) this fall. But CBS has a sharp comedy (“DMV,” shown here), two cop dramas (the strong “Boston Blue” and so-so “Sheriff Country”) and a promising music competition (“The Road”). Read more…

2) “Big Brother,” 8 p.m., CBS. It’s a re-arranged night for CBS: This show nudges the fall preview (originally set for 8 p.m.) to 9; that’s followed by a “Ghosts” rerun, with Flower feeling the world will soon end. At 10 is a key “Blue Bloods” episode from 2019, introducing Joe Hill, Danny’s nephew.

3) “The Rainmaker,” 10 p.m., USA. This hour — a fairly good one — finds Rudy at a personal low. He’s been fired from a ragged law firm, his neighbor has been beaten and his ex-girlfriend is partying with rich folks in London. Also, there’s still a killer nurse out there, holding another nurse hostage.

4) Basketball, ESPN2. The WNBA is in its playoffs now, with the third game (if needed) of the best-of-three round. Tonight (if needed), that’s Golden State-Minnesota and New York-Phoenix. That faces college football, with Tulsa-Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, Iowa-Rutgers at 8 on Fox.

5) MORE: At 8 p.m., ABC reruns the “High Potential” season-opener and NBC repeats the “America’s Got Talent” semi-finals, with 12 acts competing for the last six spots in next week’s finals. Also: At 8 ET, Turner Classic Movies has a comedy gem — Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” (1968).
