1) “Saturday Night Live” season-opener, 11:29 p.m., NBC. After a huge 50th season — winning nine Emmys for the “SNL50” special — the show regroups. It has five newcomers and lost two key people (Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim) and three newer people (Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Devon Walker). Bad Bunny hosts the opener, with Doja Cat (shown here) as music guest.
2) “Winter’s Bone” (2010), 8 p.m., VH1. On a tiny, $2-million budget, Debra Granik co-wrote and directed a gem. It had an Ozarks teen scramble to prove her father’s death and save the family home. The result drew well-deserved Oscar nominations for best-picture, the script, supporting actor John Hawkes and star Jennifer Lawrence — then 20 and now an A-lister.
3) “Matlock,” 8 p.m., CBS. Here’s the start of the two-parter that gave the season to a strong finish. Matty is close to learning who covered up a key drug study. She finds out in a rerun next Thursday — three days before the second season begins.
4) Sports. The second round of the baseball playoffs begin. On TBS and Max, it’s Cubs-Brewers at 2:08 p.m. and Dodgers-Phillies at 6:38; Fox has Yankees-Bluejays at 4:08 and Fox Sports1 has Tigers-Mariners at 8:38. That collides with football, led by ABC : Vanderbilt (ranked No. 16) at Alabama (No. 10) at 3:30 p.m,, Miami (No. 3) at Florida State (No. 18) at 7:30.
5) ALSO: This is the month when cable resurrects slasher/screamer films. IFC has the “Nightmare on Elm Street” ones at 11 a.m. and 1:15, 3:15, 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. AMC has “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” at 8 a.m. … followed by post-final (?) films at 10, 12, 2, 4 and 6. The original is at 8.
