1) CMA Awards, 8-11 p.m., ABC. There are familiar stars here, including Lainey Wilson (who hosts), Kelsea Ballerini (shown here), Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney. But there are also new-artist nominees — Stephen Wilson Jr. (alone and with Shaboozey) and Trent Wetmore. And Luke Combs links with rapper BigXthaPlug.
2) “Wicked” (2024), 8-11:30 p.m., NBC. Two days before the second film reaches theaters, we’re reminded how good the first was. A great casr (led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande) handles soaring music, amid director John Chu’s superb visuals. The result drew 10 Oscar nominations (including best picture), winning for sets and costumes.
3) “The American Revolution,” 8 p.m., PBS, rerunning at 10. With low pay and little potential, the Americans were left with a rag-tag army. Philadelphia, once their capital, was lost. But then a heroic Benedict Arnold (really) led a spectacular win; 6,000 soldiers surrendered. When word crossed the Atlantic, the French threw in some massive (and decisive) support.
4) “99 to Beat,” 9 p.m., Fox. Amid his usual inane comments, Ken Jeong offers the truth: “There’s no rhyme or reason.” None. We are watching people pick up cups until they find one that’s marked inside. This involves no skill or strategy or viewer impact. It’s another low moment in a pointless game.
5) “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent” and “Wild Cards,” 8 and 9 p.m., CW. With specials elsewhere, CW has the night’s only scripted shows on a broadcast network. First is a look at hazing, abuse and murder in the hockey world. Then is a rerun, set amid high fashion.
