1) “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” 9 p.m., AMC, rerunning at 10:11. Here’s a remarkable detour, beautifully written and played. It imagines what might happen if Maggie (shown here) and Negen had met in a no-zombie world. She’s a cool-headed farmer, visiting her sister in the city; he’s calm and thoughtful … with rage still at the core. The result is compelling.
2) Stellar Gospel Music Awards, 8-10:30 p.m., BET. Kirk Franklin — who led the dynamic merger of gospel and R&B — hosts, with special honors for Tashia Cobbs Leonard and Pastor Mike Jr. The night (Aug. 15) had music by Lisa Knowles Smith, Aaron Cole, Kierra Sheard, Darrel Walls, many more.
3) Dolly Parton specials, all night. Two new documentaries celebrate the life of Parton, who died Tuesday at 80. That’s 8 p.m. on CBS and 10 on ABC — which has Parton’s “9 to 5” movie (1980) at 7:30. Also, MeTV has a 2024 Parton documentary at 5 p.m. and a “Collector’s Call” filled with Parton artifacts at 6.
4) “Animal Control,” 8:30, Fox. Skillful liars are no fun, but clumsy ones can be hilarious. That happens in this rerun, when Emily and Shred — truly inept liars — try to hide their romance. A couple other storylines are so-so, but this one is great. It follows a “Simpsons” rerun, with Principal Skinner reluctantly becoming a parent figure for a runaway.
5) “Marshals,” 10:01 p.m., CBS. After a so-so start in its first two episodes, the show finally clicked with this one. The groundbreaking for a mine stirs anger among ranchers, and then violence. Kayce’s heart is with the ranchers; his job is with the law-enforcement people.
