Best-bets for Oct. 23: Tim, Tea, Tammy & Tampa Bay

1) “Newlyweds” debut, 8:30 p.m., NBC. Here’s the sort of comedy we need now — big and broad and mostly quite funny. Tea Leoni and Tim Daly, who married last year, play people who marry quickly. She’s bold and instinctive; he’s not. Their world is spiced by Jamie Lee Curtis (shown here, right, with Leoni) as his e-wife and hilarious newcomer Bill O’Neill as his assistant. Read more…

2) “Great Performances,” 9 p.m., PBS. Tammy Wynette’s songs rippled with passion and pain. Now 22 acts offer a musical tribute. It’s all-female (except for guys in duets or a quartet) and mostly country, with detours for “How Great Thou Art” or “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” There are great moments from Wynonna, Mandy Barnett, Debby Boone and more.

3) World Series, 8 p.m. ET, Fox, with pre-game at 7. These teams got here on tight budgets. The Milwaukee Brewers, with less than 40 percent of the Dodgers’ payroll, swept them in four games. Now they host the Tampa Bay Rays, with 70 percent of the Brewers’ payroll. The Rays have only been in two Series, the Brewers one … and neither has been champion.

4) “Happy’s Place” season-opener, 8 p.m., NBC. A lot of likable actors and pleasant characters push through some weak stabs at humor. The episode finally clicks in the last five minutes, with sight gags and solid moments between Reba McEntire and her real-life fiance, Rex Linn. That sets us up for the much better “Newlyweds.”

5) “The Rainmaker,” 10 p.m., USA Network. Last week’s opener introduced a perplexing case — a 12-year-old who got a three-year sentence for hacking the school computer. That story is quite involving as it gradually builds, pitting Rudy and his ex-girlfriend in court. A second case (involving his boss’ ex-husband) is mostly a mess.
