Daily Best Bets

Best-bets for May 22: Young stars rule “SNL”

1) “Saturday Night Live” season-finale, 11:29 p.m., NBC. Two years ago, Anya Taylor-Joy (shown here) and Lil Nas X were mostly unknown; now they’re host and music guest. She was up for two Golden Globes this year; she won for “The Queen’s Gambit” and was nominated for “Emma.” He saw his “Old Town Road” start on the country chart, cross over to pop … and spend 17 weeks at No. 1. Breaking barriers, he became the first Black and openly gay man to win a Country Music Association award. Read more…

Best-bets for May 21: Van Dyke adds color, “Tank” adds a dinosaur

1) “The Dick Van Dyke Show – Now in Living Color,” 8 p.m., CBS. Here are two episodes from a great comedy (shown here in a promo photo), now with color added by computer. The second – from the final season– lets Mel (Richard Deacon) finally stand up to Alan (Carl Reiner), his boss and brother-in-law. The first was co-written by Garry Marshall, recalling a real-life time when he had to secretly rewrite a play. Marshall would go on to produce “Happy Days,” “Laverne and Shirley, “Mork and Mindy” and more. Read more…

Best-bets for May 20: An old comedy ends, a new one continues

1) “Last Man Standing” series-finale, 9 and 9:30 p.m., Fox. It’s been a strong run for this comedy – nine seasons, spanning 10 years and two networks. The farewell, however, reminds us of that this is a very ordinary show, with forced humor salvaged (barely) by likable characters. The 9 p.m. episode – a “camping boot camp” – is so-so. The 9:30 one gives some awful lines to Jay Leno, but also has its moments, using a stolen truck (shown here) as a metaphor for a canceled show. The truck, at least, is a classic. Read more…

Best-bets for May 19: “Chicago” dramas, good and bad

1) “Chicago P.D.,” 10 p.m., NBC. Easily the best of NBC’s three Chicago shows, “P.D.” (shown here in a previous episode) offers a taut hour that spills into next week’s season-finale. Samantha Miller (Nicole Ari Parker) is a police reformer who joined the show this season; now her son needs help, in what seems like a quick case, then grows. One bit of inaction strains credibility; also, viewers will be disappointed that this is the rare “P.D.” episode that doesn’t wrap things up. Still, it’s a strong, solid hour that will bring them back next week. Read more…

Best-bets for May 18: As six shows conclude, Superman returns

1) “Prodigal Son” series finale, 9 p.m., Fox. This gothic drama ends in its fashion – deep, dark, nasty, sometimes wildly over the top. At the core is Martin (Michael Sheen), a surgeon and serial killer. Last week, we learned that his prison doctor (Catherine Zeta-Jones,shown here with Sheen) is just as cruel. After he escaped, she took him hostage … then added his son, a police profiler. Now the guys have escaped and find a convenient case to solve. There’s much more, in an hour that combines brilliant acting and fiercely excessive plot twists.

Best-bets for May 17: stars of pop and pulpit

1) “American Experience: Billy Graham,” 9-11 p.m. today, PBS. Graham (shown here) was a Southern farm kid, 6-foot-2, with blue eyes, a strong voice and an amorous nature. He quit Bob Jones College because he wanted to date girls. At another Bible school he met a missionary’s daughter; they were married 64 years, with five children. Graham was a classic evangelist, this terrific film says, but overstepped political lines. The Watergate tapes were “a crushing experience,” triggering apologies and moderation. Read more…

Best-bets for May 16: Great “Zoey” leads finale flurry

1) “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” finale, 9 p.m., NBC. If this show isn’t renewed, then … well, it will have had a great series-finale. And if it does return? For the second straight year, it’s given us an amazing season-finale. Zoey (shown here in a previous episode) – who hears people’s thoughts via pop songs – is with Simon now, but has strong feelings for the departing Max. That leads to some vibrant song-and-dance moments at the nightclub … and then to the surprising (and rather superb) finish, Read more…

Best-bets for May 15: Pop star, vaccine stars

1) “Saturday Night Live,” 11:29 p.m., NBC. Most teenagers don’t have a weekend quite like this: On Friday, Olivia Rodrigo (shown here) had the second-season opener of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” on Disney+; today is her “SNL” debut, with Keegan-Michael Key hosting. Six days later, her album will debut. Rodrigo, 18, starred for three seasons in “Bizaardvark,” before playing Nini in the Disney+ series. Her first single, “Drivers License,” was No. 1 in the U.S. and seven other countries. Read more…

Best-bets for May 14: “Blue” finishes, “Pride” begins

1) “Blue Bloods” season-finale, 9 and 10 p.m., CBS. In last season’s finale, Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) met Joe Hill, an adult grandson he didn’t know about. (Hill’s biologic father, Joe Reagan, was killed as an undercover cop.) The new Joe was in the first three episodes this season, then vanished. Now we learn he’s been working undercover, in a gang that Danny – a police detective who is Joe’s uncle — is investigating. Now Danny (center) and Jamie (right) try to save their nephew (back to camera), in a two-part finish to the 11th season. Read more…

Best-bets for May 13: A great comedy ends beautifully

1) “Mom” series finale, 9 p.m.,, CBS. One of the decade’s best comedies ends with a cascade of plot twists – some grim, some joyous, some just silly. One dandy scene has Bonnie (Allison Janney, furthest right of the women shown here) navigate the plot twists by phone, alternately putting different people on hold. Another has an Alcoholics Anonymous newcomer learn that these now-cheery women can match any of her nightmares. All of this is both hilarious and warm, twin moods that Janney handles deftly.
