Retro TV? Try CBS or digital or CW’s Canadian shows

Staring at the tangled TV universe, some people have a plea: Can’t this just be like it used to be?
It can. That’s why we have CBS …. and digital channels … and, especially, Canada.
Sure, Canada can annoy us when it sends wildfire smoke or winter wind or hockey. But it’s also full of nice people and easy-to-digest TV shows. Now a fresh batch is coming to the CW mini-network.
That starts Friday (July 7), with the second season of “Family Law” (shown here) starting at 8 p.m. and the first of “Moonshine” at 9. They’re light dramas, pleasant-enough detours from a summer of reality and reruns. Read more…

CW fills out its summer line-up

The CW network – in the midst of a year-round makeover – has finally set the rest of its summer plans.
Even before the writers’ strike, the mini-network (under new ownership) was shedding its expensive superhero adventuress. Instead, it’s going for unscripted shows or scripted ones from other countries.
An example of the former is “Inside the NFL,” coming to CW this fall, after previous runs on HBO, Showtime and Paramount+.

CW loads its summer with new (to Americans) shows

Maybe the CW network didn’t get the worry-about-the-strike memo.
Showing no signs of caution, the mini-network has announced a summer line-up that will be filled with new episodes … or ones that are new to American audiences.
That includes lots of scripted shows – American, British, Australian (shown here) and (especially) Canadian – plus some non-fiction.
With the prospect of a long Writers Guild strike, networks might have been expected to cache away prospects. CBS has announced a fall schedule with only two new shows. During the pandemic, CW used Canadian shows to prop up its fall line-up; that year, Fox delayed two summer shows until fall.
But the new summer plan indicates CW is holding nothing back. Read more…

Remember light dramas? They’re back (a little)

Let’s call this a micro-mini-trend, a course-adjustment in the TV world:
This fall, a few shows — including “The Rookie: Feds,” shown here — are trying to do it all. They want to be funny, be serious and solve a case each week.
And yes, that used to be commonplace. Writer-producer Scott Prendergast says his show (“So Help Me Todd”) is “a bit of a throwback. My main inspiration is ‘Moonlighting’ and shows like ‘Hart to Hart’ and ‘Remington Steele’ and ‘Simon & Simon.’”
