“Golden Bachelor” plans a quick wedding

Here’s one reason to feature older folks in dating shows: They actually get married.
When “The Golden Bachelor” concluded Thursday (Nov. 30), ABC promptly made an announcement: The couple’s wedding will air live Jan. 4 on ABC.
Gerry Turner, 72, a widower, is a retired restaurant owner with a lakeside home in Indiana. On the show, he met 22 women, ages 60-75, then chose Theresa Nist, 70, who does financial services work in New Jersey. (They’re shown here.)

— A female duo – Elle King and Rachel Smith — will host CBS’ New Year’s Eve coverage. Smith, who was Miss USA 2007, is an “Entertainment Tonight” reporter; King is the daughter of former “Saturday Night Live” actor Rob Schneider, but grew up in Ohio after her parents’ divorce. CBS’ show is in Nashville, familiar turf for King (a country singer) and Smith (who grew up in Tennessee).
— ABC will start the Academy Award ceremony an hour earlier than usual, in hopes of keeping people until the end. The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be 7-10:30 p.m. ET on March 10, with a red-carpet preview at 6:30 and a new “Abbott Elementary” at 10:30.
— FX has set Feb. 27 for its ambitious, 10-part “Shogun” mini-series. The film has a Japanese cast, plus British actor Cosmo Jarvis in the role Richard Chamberlain had in the 1980 mini-series, as a sea captain stranded in an unfamiliar land.
