Best-bets for May 12: strong dramas and a recast vampire

1) “Interview With the Vampire” season-opener, 9 p.m., AMC. After deep mourning for her daughter, who died at 5, Anne Rice created Claudia, who has the body of a child (when she became a vampire), the soul of an adult. She was 5 in the book, 11 in the movie and 14 here. Now she’s been recast: Delainey Hayles (sown here) is richly emotive, in a sometimes-brutal hour in 1940s Romania. Read more…

2) “MaryLand” and “Guilt,” 9 and 10 p.m., PBS. Two dramas – excellent, in opposite ways – are a week from concluding. First, two sisters adjust to the fact that their mom had a secret life on a distant island, but can’t resolve their own troubled relationship. Then two brothers return to Edinburgh, where they face a scheming loan shark, her enforcer and a cruel (but knighted) businessman.

3) “American Idol,” 8-10 p.m., ABC. The final five – Jack Blocker, Abi Carter, Will Moseley, Emmy Russell and Tristan Harper – head to Disney World, then sing two Disney songs each. Afterward, viewers pick three for next week’s finals. Also performing is Jenifer Lewis, an actress (“Black-ish”, who has done musicals, including Effie in the workshop version of “Dreamgirls.”

4) “Grimsburg” season-finale, 9:30 p.m., Fox. On a slow-crime day, Marvin searches for a missing danish … and finds a big case. That’s preceded by shows that are still a week from their finales – “Simpsons,” “Krapopolis” and “Great North.”

5) ALSO: At 7 p.m., CW has “Mamma Mia” (2008), a zesty blend of ABBA songs, hurt only by casting shaky singers as the older guys. At 9, CBS’ “Tracker” finally introduces Colter’s estranged brother, played by Jensen Ackles, the longtime “Supernatural” star. Also at 9, “The Chi” – newly renewed for next season – is back from a seven-plus month break, for the second half of a 16-episode season.
