As the season winds down, TV is filled with fresh news.
That includes a super-streamer combination, a “Law & Order” shift and a return of such shows as “The Bear” (shown here), “Ted” and (via spin-off) “Orphan Black.” Details include:
— Two large streamers plan to offer a combined deal this summer. One side already has Disney+ and Hulu; now it will offer a super-streamer combination with Max, which was created when Discovery gobbled up Warner Brothers.
There are no specifics yet, except that two prices will be available – with some ads or with none.
The two forces seem to provide opposite impact. One is strong on scripted shows; Disney just added new “Doctor Who” episodes and Hulu added the “Veil” thriller. The other has some scripted shows (via HBO and Warner Brothers), but is stronger in unscripted, via Discovery, CNN, HGTV, Food Network and more.
— As that approaches, Hulu has another key date. The entire third season of “The Bear” will be available June 27.
The show’s first season won 10 Emmys, including best comedy series. The best-actor award went to Jeremy Allen White (shown here), who has also won two best-actor Golden Globes in the show. (Due to a deadlines quirk, the second “Bear” season can’t get any Emmys until months after the third one airs.)
— The creation of a superstreamer makes it hard on others. Basic-cable channels, which had already lost about a third of their subscribers, worry about people going streaming-only; smaller streamers – Peacock, Paramount+, AMC+ — fret about being overlooked.
But Peacock – which is hoping for an Olympics boost this summer – has some other positive news now: “Law & Order: Organized Crime” will be exclusively Peacock next season, after four seasons on NBC. And “Ted,” which Peacock says is its most popular show, has been renewed for a second season.
There’s also news from others: The spin-off of the much-praised “Orphan Black” series will start June 23 on AMC and AMC+ … A second season of the “Frasier” reboot is starting filming for Paramount+ … And the National Geographic Channel has renewed “Trafficked,” the investigative show with Mariana van Zeller..
— In an unrelated (extremely) note, TV’s cooking season is coming up.
The CW network will debut “The Big Bakeover” at 8 p.m. Fridays, starting June 14. It focuses on Nancy Birtwhistle, who – when she was 60, with eight grandchildren – became the oldest winner of “The Great British Bake Off.”
That was a decade ago. Now she’ll travel the U.S. with a carpenter, bringing makeover to bakeries. The show arrives in a stretch that includes two Gordon Rasmsay food shows on Fox (“Food Stars” on May 22 and “MasterChef” on May 29) and “The Great America Recipe,” May 27 on PBS
