Best-bets for April 10: comedy, ragtime & a stampede

1) “Happy’s Place,” 8 p.m., NBC. This show often skids off the rails, but it instantly improves when Jane Lynch is there. Now Lynch — the five-time Emmy-winner — is back as imperious mother of Gabby. (They’re shown here.) Now she’s staying with Gabby, who’s desperate to oust her. Alongside another story (date night for Emmett), it’s a fun episode. Read more…

PLEASE NOTE: Many networks plan to have live-coverage of the return of the moon mission. CBS and ABC expect their coverage to be 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. ET, NBC says 8-8:30, news channels and the Weather Channel will be Longer. For CBS, ABC and NBC, that will affect the time of other shows, especially in the eastern time zone. For this, we’ll have the estimated ET times:

1) “Happy’s Place,” about 8:30 p.m., NBC.

2) “Now Hear This” season-opener, 9 p.m., PBS. Mixing keen observations and splendid music, Scott Yoo visits the lives of music greats. Now it’s Brahms, who grew up poor and prospered quickly — at first under Beethoven’s immense shadow. Brahms eventually found his own stardom, but never had the family or the steady position he had hoped for.

3) “Fire Country,” about 9:30 p.m., CBS. Here’s a crisis that doesn’t need a fire: A stampede endangers a rodeo crowd. That’s surrounded by “Sheriff Country” at 8 (a serial killer targets young women) and “Boston Blue” at 10 (Shawn and Jonah go undercover).

4) “Malcolm in the Middle,” Hulu. The four-part reboot arrives in one bunch. Malcolm’s life is actually going well … until his family arrives. Also streaming today: Hulu starts “Perfect Crown,” a Korean mini-series … Netflix has the second season of “Temptation Island” … and Peacock has the thriller movie, “If I Can’t Have You.”

5) “The Wild Angels” (1966), 9:45 p.m. ET, Turner Classic Movies. It’s easy to dismiss this low-budget film, but that overlooks the strong visuals and the terrific soundtrack from 21-year-old Mike Curb. For bigger-budget pleasures, go with “Barbie” (2023) at 8:30 p.m. TBS or James Cameron’s masterful “Terminator 2” (1991), at 8 on MGM+.
