It’s great to have new ideas, Josh Johnson says … except sometimes it’s not.
“Sometimes, something hasn’t been done before because it’s a bad idea,” Johnson, who has a new HBO special, said in a video press conference.
“Things like peanut-butter-and pickle sandwiches: No one’s done that before, because it’s a bad idea.”
He’s impressed critics with good ideas — both in his comedy and in the way he presents it. Now his “Josh Johnson: Symphony” special (debuting at 8 p.m. Friday and 10:10 p.m. Saturday, May 22-23, and also on HBO Max) offers a fresh approach, including the way he uses music.
“Three years ago, I went to the director with a kind of a nugget of my idea,” Johnson said. That came together slowly … while other ideas rushed out.
Johnson, 36, grew up in Louisiana, went to college there and moved quickly to the New York comedy scene. In 2017, he did stand-up on some shows (including “Conan”) and started writing on “The Daily Show.” He became one of the show’s on-air correspondents in 2024 and now is in its rotating set of six hosts.
Alongside that is more stand-up work, breaking the usual patterns.
Many comics try to spend a year in clubs, developing as strong hour; then they tape a special and start over. And Johnson? Every Tuesday, he pours out a new hour of comedy and commentary on his YouTube channel; meanwhile, he’s been pondering pieces of his special.
His previous ones were on Comedy Central and Peacock, but now he’s moving to the top. “HBO’s specials are what I’d call artistically discerning,” he said. “Everything that goes on HBO is intentional.”
His weekly humor can be propelled by current quirks, but this new one tries to blend broader concepts of life –possibly fitting together like music.
With a familiar song at an arena, Johnson said, “thousands of people who can’t sing” somehow blend successfully. That doesn’t work in a smaller spot — even churches aren’t big enough” to mask individuals.
But en masse, things blend. You can have a symphony of ideas and comedy, combining for something better than a peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwich.
