Week’s top-10 for Sept. 28: It’s starting time for CBS, witches and playoffs

1) “Marshals” season-opener, 8:30 p.m. (but 8 p.m. PT) Sunday, CBS. This is when the new fall season is really here, CBS has held out, waiting to start its scripted shows Oct. 4-9. That begins with a high-stakes story: Kayce is starting to like Dolly Weaver (they’re shown here), but despises her dad, who wants to buy his ranch. That leads to a strong hour, high-octane and lethal.

2) “Coven Academy” debut, 8-10 p.m. Thursday, Freeform. It’s the start of “31 Nights of Halloween,” going for macabre-lite. Thursday has “Addams Family” films at 1:55 and 3:55 and “Hocus Pocus” at 5:55. Then “Coven” begins, with teen witches in New Orleans. You can catch it over three Thursdays, or all 10 episodes Friday on Disney+ and Hulu.

3) “All American” series finale, 8 p.m. today, CW. Eight years ago, Daniel Ezra began playing Spencer, a football star transferring to Beverly Hills. Ezra left two years ago, but returns to direct and star in the last episode. Spencer has one of his most important days … Olivia leans on her mom for a key decision … and others face transitions.

4) Baseball playoffs. The Wild Card round will be bunched into three busy days, with games Tuesday. Wednesday and (if needed) Thursday. They’ll all be on Peacock and will also be on NBC (including 2 and 8 p.m. ET Tuesday and Wednesday) and the NBC Sports Network. On Saturday, the next round starts on TBS, TruTV and HBO Max.

5) “Amazing Race” and more, CBS. Before its scripted shows start, CBS has its reality ready: “Survivor” continues Wednesday, “Big Brother” concludes Thursday, both from 8-9:30 p.m. And “Amazing Race” follows, opening its season from 9:30-11 p.m. both nights. It also has a special, “The Amazing Race: 25 Years Around the World,” at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

6) “Comics Unleashed” anniversary special, 9-11 p.m. Tuesday, CBS. It’s easy to resent Byron Allen: CBS replaced Stephen Colbert with Allen’s micro-budget “Unleashed.” But let’s not blame him; he’s gone from a teen comedian on Johnny Carson’s show to a mogul whose company owns stations, The Weather Channel and more.

7) “Scrubs” season-openers, 8 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, ABC. Half-hour comedies are scarce now. This is the first broadcast-network one (cartoons excluded) to have new episodes this fall. They juggle the serious — Dr. Cox has an incurable autoimmune condition — and fun: Elliot finds fresh confidence; J.D. tries an insurance workaround.

8) “East of Eden,” Thursday, Netflix. Back in 1955, Elia Kazan directed James Dean in a classic version of John Steinbeck’s story. Now Zoe Kazan (Elia’s granddaughter) directs a seven-parter. That same day, HBO Max starts “War,” a high-stakes divorce drama. On Friday, AMC+ has Catherine Zeta-Jones in the “Kill Jackie” miniseries.

9) “Asco: Without Permission,” 10 p.m. Friday, PBS. In 1970, four Chicano teens began doing guerrilla art in Los Angeles. They did graffiti, parades, performances, more. They called their group Asco, expanded it, then folded it in ’87, for separate careers. Now their early work is in the art galleries they mocked. It’s a great story, told with a few unneeded detours.

10) MORE: There are openers for “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” (8 p.m. Friday, ABC), “Tip Toe” (9:05 p.m. Friday, Starz) and “Tracker” (9 :30 p.m. Sunday, CBS, but 9 p.m. PT). PBS has the Hispanic Heritage Awards at 9 Friday and potent dramas Sunday. “Saturday Night Live” (11:29 p.m., NBC) is hosted by Dakota Johnson, with music from Turnstile.
