Week’s top 10 for Nov. 2: comedy openers and a crowded election

1) “St. Denis Medical” season-opener, 8 p.m. today, NBC. It was 36 years ago that David Alan Grier and Damon Wayans linked in the Emmy-winning “In Living Color.” Now they’ve re-united for one episode, a funny one: Ron (Grier, 70, shown here center in a previous episode) is recovering from heart surgery; his temporary replacement (Wayans, 66) spews slogans and pep talks. 2) “Cupertino,” 10 p.m. Thursday and 8-11 p.m. Sunday, CBS. Thursday’s hour (underpaid people training an AI) is a good one; Sunday’s first hour is a great one: An algorithm has taken a transplant away from Christy’s friend. Now comes Zoom justice, with everyone tied up in a traffic jam. That’s followed by reruns of the show’s terrific first two episodes.

3) “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins,” 8:30 p.m. today, NBC. Last season ended with the slightest glimmer of hope: Reggie — his football career ended by a gambling scandal — got a few Hall of Fame votes. Now he tries to push forward … unaware that his son is dating his enemy’s daughter. This weaves between clever bits and ones that are just overwrought.

4) Election coverage, Tuesday. It will be blanket coverage for one of the most vital mid-term elections in U.S. history. Plans call for NBC to start at 6:30 p.m. ET, CBS at 7, ABC and PBS at 8, with news channels obsessing all day. Most will continue until 11 p.m. or later. Exceptions are CW (game shows), Fox (see No. 5) and cable (No. 6).

5) “Best Medicine.” 8 p.m. Tuesday, Fox. After a one-week baseball break, this gentle gem returns with an election-night hour. A self-proclaimed homeopath is back and townsfolk feel they’ve had miracle cures. Martin tries to debunk them, while worrying about the relationship between his secret crush and his medical monitor. “Doc” follows at 9.

6) Cable movies, Tuesday. There are plenty of other election-night choices, with cable slating crowdpleaser films. Want strong drama? Try “Terminator” (7:30 p.m., BBC America) or “American Sniper” (9, Syfy). Or comedy? Try “Bridesmaids” (8, E) or the first “Toy Story” films (7 and 8:55, Freeform). Or both? “Argo” is 7 p.m., Showtime; “Beverly Hills Cop” is 8, AMC.

7) “Nova: Evolution,” 9 p.m. Wednesday, PBS. Using great visuals, this shows how mating efforts transformed species. To lure a mate, males developed feathers, bright colors, imposing antlers, even an enormous nose. That reshaped generations. We see a four-billion-year leap, from single-cell beings to the ostrich — nine feet tall, with 40-mph speed.

8) “Elsbeth,” 9 p.m. Thursday, CBS. Here’s another show that’s back from a one-week break. The story involves two quick surprises — a prize-winning hole-in-one and the death of the country club president. Already a good show, this improved by adding Christine Ebersole as Elsbeth’s mom. Now they meet Elsbeth’s son’s future mother-in-law.

9) “Sheriff Country” and “Fire Country,” 8 and 9 p.m. Friday, CBS. It’s time for a high-stakes, crossover event: A prison break escalates into a hostage crisis; the sheriff must make a quick, personal decision. In the second hour, there’s a dangerous manhunt, plus efforts to protect loved ones. Morena Baccarin, Max Thieriot and others are in both hours.

10) “Happy’s Place,” 8 p.m. Friday, NBC. It’s a mixed world for Jane Lynch. A potent force on many shows (with 14 Emmy nominations and five wins), she can’t save Fox’s awful “Weakest Link” reboot, but sometimes saves this show. She’s back as Gabby’s overbearing mom, in a surprisingly good episode of a so-so series. A funny “Newlyweds” follows.
