TV’s best new show will soon get a Sunday-night boost.
“Cupertino” is usually confined to 10 p.m. Thursdays on CBS. But on Sunday, Nov. 8, it will air three hours — a new one (complete with traffic-jam jurisprudence, shown here) and then reruns of the first two episodes.
Those are the episodes that set things in motion: An evil law firm fired two people — Michael (Mike Colter, shown here with Renee Elise Goldsberry), an experienced pro, and Olivia (Rachel Keller), in her first year out of law school. They soon formed their own tiny firm, to take on the giants of Silicon Valley.
By the end of the second episode, the show had added key people — Christy (Ella Stiller), a young office manager; Natalie (Busy Philipps), a rich divorcee; and Vikram (Nik Dodani), a computer whiz. It had also introduced Bo (Rob McClure), whose identiy — and existence — were in dispute.
The result drew unanimous acclaim. The Rotten Tomatoes website reported 100-percent approval among critics; both the Metacritic website and Rotten Tomatoes put the average rating at 8.5 out of 10.
That still leaves thr scramble to lure viewers; the Sunday showcase may help.
“Cupertino” is from Robert and Michelle King, a married duo that has had lawyers at the of “The Good Wife,” “The Good Fight” and “Elsbeth.” Two exceptions were “BrainDead,” a fantasy tale, and “Evil,” with Colter in a team hired by the Catholic church to probe supernatural events.
At time (with Bo), “Cupertino” seems just this side of supernatural; at other times, it’s a dazzling legal show, filled with whimsy. Here are the upcoming episodes; except where noted, all are at 10 p.m.; all then go to Paramount+:
— Oct. 29: After a one-night fling, Christy finds herself on a private jet heading for … somewhere. Soon, there are mid-air efforts to solve a legal crisis, in a story filled with quick twists.
–Nov. 5: Olivia wants her friend to be at the front of a lawsuit, arguing that tech companies violate wage rules when paying people who train AI systems. Also, there’s fresh information about the mysterious Bo.
— Nov. 8: Now for a judicial whirlwind: Christy’s roommate was on top of the transplant list — until AI intervened. The case must be settled quickly, but the lawyers and judge are separately tangled in a traffic jam. It’ssort of trial-by-Zoom. That’s at 8 p.m.; the show’s first two episodes rerun at 9 and 10.
— Nov. 12: Is AI stealing songs, tinkering slightly and selling them as its own? Method Man guests as a bitter musician.
