Many hours have been spent on two worthy debates:
1) Who was the best “Star Trek” captain? and
2) Who was the best Scrooge?
I’ll save you some time. The answer to both is Patrick Stewart (shown here as Scrooge), who died Wednesday at 86.
Stewart was superb in the 1999 “A Christmas Carol.” You can catch it now on Amazon Prime or wait until December, when it has its annual TNT showing.
And, of course, he was the commanding Capt. Picard in movies and in the series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” … which some people can catch anytime.
There’s the “Trek” mother lode on Paramount+. And there’s the Heroes & Icons digital channel, where you can see him most days.
H&I has nightly marathons, with “Star Trek” at 8, “Next Generation” at 9, “Deep Space Nine” at 10, “Voyager” at 11 and “Enterprise” at midnight. The only exceptions are Saturdays plus this Sunday (Nov. 1). That’s when the entire, five-hour block will have “Star Trek” episodes with key roles for Chekov, played by Walter Koenig, who died last Sunday at 90.
That should be a worthy memorial for Koenig … and we can expect some major ones ahead for Stewart — the best captain, the best Scrooge, a potent Shakespearean and, at times, even a sly comedy actor.
Stewart mastered space, Scrooge and Shakespeare
