1) “Sheriff Country” and “Fire Country,” 8 and 9 p.m., CBS. Here’s a high-stakes, crossover event that has both shows’ stars — including Matt Lauria and Max Thieriot, shown here — in each hour. A prison break escalates into a hostage crisis; the sheriff must make a quick, personal decision. The second hour has a manhunt, amid efforts to protect loved ones.
2) “Happy’s Place,” 8 p.m., NBC. It’s a mixed world for Jane Lynch. A potent force on many shows (with 14 Emmy nominations and five wins), she can’t save Fox’s awful “Weakest Link” reboot, but sometimes saves this show. She’s back as Gabby’s overbearing mom, in a surprisingly good episode.
3) “Newlyweds,” 8:30 p.m., NBC. There was one flaw in the whirlwind courtship and marriage of James and Jeanie: They never got a honeymoon. Now he creates one cleverly, only to be interrupted by … well, everything. It’s a funny episode, even bringing some extra respect for James.
4) “Salute to Service,” 9-10 p.m., PBS. Jason Kelce, the six-time All-Pro center, gets to do it all. A former teen saxophonist (in jazz and symphonic
bands), he wails with the Jazz Ambassadors. He also joins another former football pro, Alejandro Villanueva (an Army Bronze Star winner) in training. There’s also music from Jon Batiste and military groups.
5) “It Gets Worse,” Paramount+. For some viewers — well, many viewers — this goes way too far; the language is harsh, the sexual references are extreme. Others, however, will find it hilarious. Leo Reich has written and stars as a great character — a likable gay lad, devoid of any life skills. The first episode, focusing on him, is the best.
