Best-bets for Oct. 2: “Vampire” leads a three-debut night

1) “Interview With the Vampire” debut, 10:06 to 11:25 p.m., AMC. In a huge plunge, AMC bought rights to 18 Anne Rice novels. “Mayfair Witches” is next, but first is this nine-parter. “Interview” is lushly filmed, sharply written and beautifully acted. (Shown here are Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid, as Louis and Lestat, the blond vampire who turned him.) For more than half the opener, it feels like top-grade “Masterpiece Theatre”; then it explodes into sex and violence, which will repel some viewers and fascinate others. Read more…

2) “East New York” debut, 9:30-11 p.m., CBS. Regina (Amanda Warren) is having a busy first day. She chases a gunman, before starting work as the new precinct commander. Now she still has to choose an assistant, huddle with the police chief (Jimmy Smits) and convince cops to live in the area they patrol. It’s a crowded (overcrowded?) start to a show from two “NYPD Blue” producers, but it has potential to get better quickly.

3) “Family Law” debut, 8 p.m., CW. Here’s a cautionary tale for lawyers: Don’t be late, don’t be hungover and don’t vomit on your client. After Abigail (Jewel Staite) does all of those, her life and career plummet; this series watches her try to rebuild both. The first couple case-of-the-week stories are so-so, but this Canadian show remains entertaining. It’s solidly crafted, as are most shows from Canada — including “Coroner,” which starts its season at 9.

4) “The Equalizer,” 8:30 p.m., CBS. Last season ended in mid-crisis: Robyn (Queen Latifah), who was about to lead an effort to stop a dirty bomb, was kidnapped. Now her friends and family – kept apart until now – combine for a rescue attempt. Even Harry is away from his computers and in the action.

5) ALSO: After 10-plus seasons and 169 episodes (so far), “The Walking Dead” returns for its final eight episodes. The previous one reruns at 7:57 p.m., leading into a new one at 9: Daryl and Negan rush to the commonwealth, to protect their families from Hornsby. Also, Mercer needs Rosita’s help battlingh a swarm; Pamela faces protesters demanding instant punishment for Sebastian.
