The latenight shows are finally returning, with new episodes.
Most of them — ABC’s Jimmy Kimnmel, CBS’ Stephen Colbert, NBC’s Jimmy Fallon (shown here) and Seth Meyers – plan to start Monday (Oct. 2). Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” arrives two weeks later, leaving only “Saturday Night Live” undecided.
Those changes follow the return of HBO’s weekly shows, with Bill Maher on Friday (Sept. 29) and John Oliver on Sunday (Oct. 1).
The Writers Guild contract won’t officially be ratified until the members’ voting period ends, Oct. 9. However, the Guild board gave members permission to return to work now.
That still leaves one obstacle: As long as the Screen Actors Guild is on strike, members are barred from going on the shows to discuss their current shows.
The latenight return schedule is:
— Friday (Sept. 29): “Real Time with Bill Maher,” 10 p.m., HBO, rerunning at midnight.
— Sunday (Sept. 30): “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” 11 p.m., HBO, rerunning at 11:41.
— Monday (Oct. 2): Kimmel, Colbert and Fallon, 11:35 p.m.; Meyers, 12:37 a.m.
— Oct. 16: “The Daily Show,” 11 p.m., Comedy Central. It will continue to have guest hosts, expecting to have a permanent one in 2024.
— Indefinite: “Saturday Night Live,” NBC. Also, CBS is working on a lower-cost show to replace James Corden, whose show has ended its nine-year run. For now, the 12:37 a.m. weekday slot goes to reruns of “Comics Unleashed,” with Byron Allen introducing stand-up comedians.
