Best-bets for May 14: amid the finales, a season-opener

1) “Sullivan’s Crossing” season-opener, 8 p.m., CW. Last season ended with jolts: Maggie and Cal (shown here) finally admitted they love each other … just as she found she was pregnant by her ex-fiance. 1) “Sullivan’s Crossing” season-opener, 8 p.m., CW. Last season ended with jolts: Maggie and Cal (shown here) finally admitted they love each other … just as she found she was pregnant by her ex-fiance. Then the diner exploded, after her dad raced in for a rescue. Now — a week later than scheduled, due to a news special — a good episode views the aftershocks.

2) “The Amazing Race,” 9:30-11 p.m., CBS. Here’s the first half of a season-finale that concludes Thursday. For now, four duos remain. There are married couples (Josiah and Alyssa, both nurses; and Jonathan and Ana) plus siblings (Han and Holden) and friends (Carson and Jack). Now they race through Portugal; Thursday brings Miami and a winner.

3) “Bugs That Rule the World” opener, 10 p.m., PBS. The overall message is grim — species in decline, including some (bees, for instance) that are crucial. But beyond that, you’ll savor the superb filming and the human portraits — from an African honey-hunter to a Baltimore woman proving a relationship between real-estate bigotry and the hardiness of ants.

4) “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Barbie” (2023), 8 and 9:35 p.m., HBO. Here are two gems from director/co-writer Greta Gerwig. The first is a low-budget indie, the second is a big, splashy box-office hit, but both are perfectly crafted. Along with “Little Women” (2019), they reflect a great filmmaker.

5) ALSO: Other shows are a week from their season-finales, includes “Survivor” at 8 p.m. on CBS and all three Chicago shows on NBC. Meanwhile, “Sherlock & Daughter” (9 p.m., CW) has Amelia investigating on her own … until things turn lethal.
