1) “My Mom, Jayne,” 8 p.m., HBO and Max. Jayne Mansfield(shown here) was a brainy beauty with a chaotic life. She posed in Playboy, did a nude scene in a movie, starred on Broadway, had three husbands and five children. At 34, she died in a car crash. Now Mariska Hargitay — the Emmy-winning actress who was 3 when her mom died — has made this documentary.
2) “Squid Game,” Netflix. TV’s most-watched series returns. Last season, trade-paper Variety says, its average episode was seen by 27.1 million people. That’s eight million more than the second best (Netflix’s “Adolescence”) and almost 10 million more than the top broadcast show, “Tracker.”
3) “Resident Alien,” 11 p.m., USA and Syfy. Stripped of his alien powers, Harry is a mere human; he’s not happy about it. Then comes someone from his old life; it’s another great acting exercise for Alan Tudyk. There are also terrific moments for the sheriff and for D’Arcy.
4) “Grammy Greats: The Most Memorable Moments,” 9-11 p.m., CBS. Spicing up TV’s summer slumber, CBS keeps rerunning music specials. Lately, it’s had Dua Lipa, Elton John, Ringo Starr and songwriters. Now it looks at key Grammy moments, with Lipa, John, Ricky Martin, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Urban, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool J and more.
5) “American Masters,” 9 p.m., PBS. Hannah Arendt was a philosopher with a front-row view of evil. She was arrested twice by the Nazis — in her native Germany and in France. In the U.S., she wrote often of the “banality of evil,” with people drifting into reprehensible actions. Here’s a profile.
