Week’s top-10 for Sept. 21: openers and “AGT” finale

1) “America’s Got Talent” finals, 10 p.m. Tuesday and 9-11 p.m. Wednesday, NBC. It’s been an odd year, with only two music acts — Nene Royal (shown here) and Lai Noelle, ages 16 and 14 — in the finals. There are four dance acts (including dogs, robots and light-up dancers), another dog act, two magic acts and an aerialist. They perform Tuesday and viewers vote; the next day, there’s a winner.

2) “The Voice” season-openers, 8-10 p.m. today and Tuesday, 8-9 p.m. Wednesday, NBC. Entwined with the “AGT” finals is the start of the “Voice” blind auditions. This year, two new judges arrive — Queen Latifah and country’s Riley Green. It’s the 19th year for Adam Levine and the 11th for Kelly Clarkson — each with four champions so far.

3) “The Simpsons” season-opener, 8 p.m. Sunday, Fox. Consider this Homer’s greatest adventure — getting a British author (Emma Thompson) to a reading, in time to save the school. This requires car theft, jail break and expressway chaos, all worth it. There are plenty of funny moments, plus a clever shift into different styles of children’s-book artwork.

4) “New York: A Documentary Film,” 9-11 p.m. today and Tuesday, PBS. Ric Burns’ brilliant docu-series debuted in 1999, then added chapters two years later that were obscured by the 9/11 attacks. Now Burns finishes the job. Tonight’s chapter is good; Tuesday’s is superb, watching the city overcome 9/11, storms, a Wall Street collapse and the pandemic.

5) “Line of Fire,” 10 p.m. today, NBC. Mike (Peter Krause) is trying to retire from the Secret Service; his estranged wife (Hope Davis) is a U.S. marshal. Their daughter is in the FBI; their sons are in the Secret Service and the Department of Justice. This is a busy bunch — but also a kind of distant one. There’s little here to get the viewers involved.

6) “Survivor” season-opener, 8-10 p.m. Wednesday, CBS. This 50th season starts an “open era,” with twists and detours. The 21 people include three farmers, two lawyers, a doctor, a med student, a wrestler and actress Ana Sani. She’s done lots of voices (Strawberry Shortcake, Izzy Moonbow, etc) and played an analyst on “The Boys,” killed after five episodes.

7) “The Floor” season-opener, 8-9 p.m. Wednesday, Fox. Each of the 100 contestants is a champion of something. There are reality-show winners, beauty queens, athletes and more. One fun match pits people who are wildly unfamiliar with the category. Fox follows with openers of “99 to Beat” at 9, then “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Special Forces” on Thursday.

8) “A Different World,” Thursday, Netflix. The “Cosby Show” spin-off gets an ambitious, 10-part reboot. Maleah Jai Moon, a Tony-winner, is excellent as a privileged-but-likable college freshman. Past stars (including Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy as her parents) are there, plus lots of newcomers. There’s enough music, dance and zest to override story flaws.

9) “Video Music Awards,” 7:30-9:30 ET (but 7-9 p.m. PT); also, MTV and Paramount+. Madonna opens the show, her first VMA performance in 23 years,. She leads in nominations (as she also did in 1990 and ;98), this time with 11. She’s already had 19 wins (plus the Video Vanguard Award) and more then 80 nominations. Snoop Dogg hosts.

10) Much more. Tuesday is packed, with a “Judge Judy” special (8 p.m., CBS), a new “R.J. Decker” (10 p.m., ABC, rerunning at 8 Friday) and the “Doc” season-opener (9 p.m., Fox). On Friday, “Sing Democracy 250” (9 p.m., PBS) has splendid music, but clumsy production. And Jalen Brunson hosts the “Saturday Night Live” opener (11:29 p.m. Saturday, NBC).
