1) “Home Sweet Home” debut, 8 p.m., NBC. Each week, people with opposite lives will trade places. That’s been done before (“Wife Swap,” “30 Days”), but now Ava DuVernay (shown here, working on an upcoming episode) – the “Selma” director and “Queen Sugar” producer – is in charge, awash in good intentions. In the opener, a Greek Orthodox family swaps with a two-mom Black family. Both families are deeply evolved, so similar phrases – “we’re all the same,” etc. – persist. The intentions are sweet, but quite repetitious.
2) Baseball, 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox. The best-of-seven series starts, determining the American League team in the World Series. Both teams got through the first round by winning three out of four games – the Red Sox over Tampa Bay (which had a league-best 100 wins during the regular season) and the Astros over the White Sox. Now the Astros host; the National League games start Saturday on TBS.
3) “La Frontera,” 9 p.m., PBS; concludes next week. In news reports, the Texas-Mexico border can seem ominous; that’s not what Pati Jinich found. She grew up in Mexico City (with grandparents from Austria and Slovakia) and became a chef in Washington, D.C. Traveling the border, she finds a popular Syrian-Lebanese restaurant … an all-woman mariachi band in its 20th year … a gorgeous national park … and cattle, sauntering between countries. In a year, 600,000 of them cross the border.
4) “Magnum P.I.,” 9 p.m., CBS. TV has plenty of stories about murder, fewer about stolen golf clubs. Tonight, however, Magnum, Higgins and Rick go undercover at a ritzy golf club, after a caddie is fired after being accused of theft. Then “Blue Bloods” has Frank tempted by a job offer.
5) “Citizen Kane” (1941), 9:30 p.m. ET, Turner Classic Movies. Orson Welles’ masterpiece was chosen by the American Film Institute as the best movie ever. It leads a night filled with … well, Jamie Lee Curtis in peril. “Halloween” (1978), a well-crafted low-budgeter, is at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on AMC, followed by “Halloween II” (1981) at 6 p.m. and the 20th-anniversary film — “Halloween H20” (1998) – at 8. The 40th-anniversary film (also titled “Halloween”), from 2018, is at 8 and 10:30 p.m. on FX.
