Week’s top-10 for June 10: Tonys cap a busy stretch

1) Tony Awards, 8-11 p.m. Sunday, CBS. In the midst of last year’s writers’ strike, Ariana DeBose hosted a vibrant (and scriptless) ceremony, rippling with music. Now she’s back and has a script. We can expect large-scale numbers from the five best-musical nominees (led by Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen,” shown here, with 13 nominations), four best-musical-revival nominees and more. Read more…

We can expect large-scale numbers from the five best-musical nominees (led by Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen,” shown here, with 13 nominations), four best-musical-revival nominees and more.

2) “Grantchester” season-opener, 9 p.m. Sunday, PBS. One of TV’s best mystery shows will soon have its next crime-solving vicar. James Norton did three seasons; Tom Brittney did the next five and will stay for two more episodes. Personal struggles take place alongside crimes to solve with Geordie, a local cop. This season’s first three episodes are brilliant; the other three are fairly good.

3) Sports surge, Right now, ABC is stuffed with finals. For basketball (Dallas-Boston), that’s 8:30 p.m. ET Wednesday and Friday; for hockey (Edmonton-Florida), it’s 8:30 p.m. today, Thursday and Saturday. Need more? Fox has the United Football League championship, at 5 p.m. Sunday. NBC will have the U.S. Olympic trials, at 8 p.m. daily; that starts Saturday with swimming.

4) “The 1% Club,” 9 p.m. today, Fox. In a summer overrun with noisy game shows, this stands out. Last week’s debut had clever questions and gently entertaining exchanges between host Patton Oswalt and some contestants. The show starts with 100 people, then drops anyone who misses one of the increasingly difficult questions. A few of the instructions are confusing, but mostly this is fun.

5) “Air” (2023), 8-10 p.m..Tuesday, ABC. Real-life sports stories reach both extremes Tuesday. Hulu’s “Clipped” shows frantic dismay, after a tape reveals a rant by the Los Angeles Clippers owner. “Air” has fun, with the story of Nike’s effort to sign Michael Jordan and create a special shoe. Ben Affleck directed and played Nike owner Phil Knight, with Matt Damon as Knight’s key man.

6) “Wild Cards” return, 9 p.m. Wednesday, CW. For the new CW owners, this has been the biggest success, linking smart mysteries and sharp, likable people. A demoted cop (Giacomo Gianniotti, who was DeLuca in “Grey’s Anatomy”) reluctantly works with a cheery grifter (Vanessa Morgan, who was Toni in “Riverdale”). Reruns start now, with a second season sometime in 2025.

7) “Welcome to Wrexham” season-finale, 10 p.m. Thursday, FX. Last week ended with an upset loss and a bitter, blistering coach. Now the season’s last five games are crucial. That’s on a big night for streamers – the season-openers of “The Boys” on Amazon Prime and the mid-season return of “Bridgerton” on Netflix. One day earlier, Apple TV+ has David E. Kelly’s “Presumed Innocent” remake.

8) “Greatest @Home Videos,” 8 p.m. Friday, CBS. Back in 2020, this celebrated the creativity that bubbled online during the pandemic. Now it settles for a few specials a year, with Cedric the Entertainer showing fun videos This one arrives two days before Father’s Day, with lots of dad projects. Also, the second annual “Cedy Award” is given to a 7-year-old boy in New York City.

9) “Professor T” and “D.I. Ray” season-openers, 8 and 10 p.m. Sunday, PBS. Jasper Tempest is a solemn soul, a criminology prof with a troubled childhood. Now he’s grimmer than ever – in jail, awaiting charges for firing a gun in a police building. Even there, he solves an interesting case seach week. By comparison, Ray (Parminder Nagra) has one tough case, stretching over six weeks.

10) “House of the Dragon” season-opener, 9 p.m. Sunday, HBO; also. Max. The season-finale was chaotic for Rhaenyra. Her father, the king, died …. She and her younger half-brother were separately crowned …. Her baby was stillborn …. Her son Luke and his dragon were killed in battle. Viewers have had 20 months to fume about that; now the second season begins with an epic war.
