It’s a busy time for fantasy folks

For sci-fi and fantasy fans, there’s no late-summer snooze.
Announcements keep emerging from Comic-Con in San Diego, some of them about shows that will arrive before September.
Earlier this week (see separate story), fans heard about current shows — “House of the Dragon.” “The Walking Dead: Dead City” and “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” — plus “Lanterns,” which starts Aug. 16. They also heard of a November blitz that will bring entire seasons of “Blade Runner 2099” and “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
Then came a new round of news about “Futurama” (shown here) and others. Chronologically, that includes:
— Aug. 3: “Futurama,” the sci-fi cartoon from “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, starts its season with two episodes. There will be eight more, on Mondays. This is the 14th season, sprawled over a 27-year stretch. In addition, “Futurama” is planning three supersized specials, the first set for Christmas season of 2027.
— Aug. 28: “Dark Matter” starts its second season on Apple. The first season saw a physicist (Joel Edgerton of “Train Dreams”) snatched into alternate versions of his life, then scrambling to get back to the world he knows with his wife (Jennifer Connelly of “Snowpiercer”). This will air on 10 Fridays, ending on the night before Halloween.
— Sept. 8: This marks the 60th anniversary of the first “Star Trek” episode. On that day, “Star Trek Scouts” will launch its second season, which has 30 three-minute YouTube episodes aimed at pre-schoolers. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will have its season’s final new shows on Sept. 10, 17 and 24.
— Oct. 7: The new “Carrie” will air all eight episodes on Prime. This is the fourth version of Stephen King’s debut novel; Summer Howell steps into a role held by Sissy Spacek in 1976, Angela Bettis in a 2002 TV movie and Chloe Grace Moretz in 2012.
— Early 2027: “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” starts its second season. Cadets will rescue and bring back a young man, unaware he’s a fugitive.
