1) “Saturday Night Live,” 11:29 p.m., NBC. The “SNL” summer ends the same way the regular season ended — with Will Ferrell hosting and Paul McCartney as music guest. Ferrell even shows up in chains as the ghost of Jeffrey Epstein (shown here), haunting Donald Trump. Next Saturday, “SNL” has its earliest opener in 14 years, with basketball’s Jalen Brunson hosting.
2) Football, 4 and 10 p.m. ET, CW. The big games are elsewhere, but let’s credit little CW for injecting itself in the mix, via deals with two conferences. At 4, it has the Atlantic Coast Conference; Stanford (nowhere near the Atlantic Ocean) faces Duke. At 10, San Diego State, of the newly restored Pac-12 Conference, hosts James Madison.
3) More football. Now for the bigger games: At the top, Louisiana State and Mississippi, ranked No. 7 and 8, collide at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Also at 7:30, Notre Dame (No. 3)-Michigan State on NBC, Brigham Young (No. 11) Colorado State on CBS, Colorado-Northwestern on Fox. At 3:30, ESPN2 has
Southern Methodist (No. 16) and Louisville (No. 23).
4) Tom or Leo: For Tom Cruise fans, there are the “Top Gun” films at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Paramount and “Jerry Maguire” at 7 on TruTV. And Leonardo DiCaprio, groping for survival? “Titanic” is 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. on E; “The Revenant” is 8 p.m. on HBO.
5) More movies: Cartoons are led by “Encanto” at 7 p.m. on the Disney Channel and “Coco” at 9:25 p.m. on Freeform. Also, the Oscar-winning drama “Argo” is 8 p.m. on Showtime and Sidney Poitier is superb in the gently moving “To Sir, With Love,” at 8 p.m. ET on Turner Classic Movies.
