Can the droll charm of an English village be transformed into an American TV series?
We’ll find out next season, when Fox tries a new version of the “Doc Martin” series. Josh Charles (“The Good Wife,” “Sports Night”) will star as the displaced doctor.
This version will be produced by Ben Silverman, whose best success has been with U.S. versions of overseas hits. That has included “The Office,” “Ugly Betty” and “Jane the Virgin.”
In this case, he’s adapting a show (shown here) that had a thoroughly English flavor:
Its main character, Dr. Martin Best, had a sort of upper-class British reserve. In American terms, he was Sheldon-esque — lost in his own mind and blunt with others.
Suddenly, he moved to a tiny English fishing village. He was the only doctor, in a place where everyone seemed to know everyone’s else’s business.
Sprawled over a long span (2004 to 2022), the show had 10 seasons and 79 episodes, which are on the Acorn streaming service. All starred Martin Clunes, who first did Doc Martin as a supporting character in the 2000 movie, “Saving Grace.”
Now it moves to an East Coast fishing village and to Fox, which has had recent success adapting shows from Italy (“Doc”) and Argentina (“The Cleaning Lady”).
