Here’s a guide to potent “Dutton” season-finale

In the olden days — well, a few years ago — shows doled out big moments carefully.
There were 22 episodes (or more) each season. If they rushed things, their world would implode the first year.
And nowadays? With short seasons, streaming shows can be high-octane. The latest example is “Dutton Ranch” (shown here), which closes its first season with a powerhouse episode Friday (July 3) on Paramount+ and, at 10 p.m.,, on the Paramount Network. Read more…

In just nine episodes, this manages to destroy two ranches, start two romances and kill lots of people and cattle.
And it’s done it in the style of other Tyler Sheridan productions — terse, taut dialog carrying deep layers under a quiet surface.
If you haven’t started yet, it’s best to catch ir from the beginning. (The first eight hours are on Paramount+ now; the ninth arrives at 3 a.m. ET Friday.)
With that in mind, I’ll avoid and spoilers about the first eight episodes until the end. First, here’s a rundown of the people; then is a spoiler-strewn account of what’s happened to them:

AT THE DUTTON RANCH
— Beth Dutton, the daughter of the late John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner in “Yellowstone”), who ran a Montana mega-ranch. Rip Wheeler (shown here), her husband, who was that ranch’s foreman. They are sturdy people who adopted Carter Green, now 19, when he was orphaned.
— Their two ranch hands. Azal Ramos has been with the ranch since the previous owner; Zach Moss arrived straight from prison.

AT THE 10 PETAL RANCH
— Beulah Jackson (played by Annette Bening), the owner, continuing a 190-year-old empire that began when her ancestor rustled cattle.
— The men she calls “my two sons.” Rob-Will Jackson, foul and alcoholic, is her biologic son. Joaquin Jackson Reyes was raised as his brother; he has a more civilized surface and seemed like her successor to run the ranch.
— Oreana Jackson, Rob-Will’s daughter. She’s an untamed spirit who will inherit the ranch some day … if she doesn’t flee or self-destruct first.

THE OTHERS
— Everett McKinney (played by Ed Harris), the local veterinarian. He’s a Vietnam vet and an endlessly decent man.
— Handy Wade, the sheriff. He seems aware of the endless lawbreaking, but doesn’t do much about it.

NOW THE SPOILERS
If you plan to catch the previous episodes on Paramount+, please skip this final part. If you’re going to go straight to Friday’s finale, a terrific one, here are the basics:
Beth and Rip saw two thriving ranches shattered — in Montana by wildfire and in Texas, when hoof-and-mouth disease (from a corrupt auction) destroyed the herd.
That left both of them working for the 10 Petal, a place with problems. When Beulah was 16, she killed her rapist, then raised their son Rob-Will … who killed someone who found out about the ranch’s illegal dealings.
Rob-Will was sent to rehab and Joaquin seemed ready to take over. Then Rob-Will returned and threatened destruction if Joaquin was in charge.
At a “celebration,” Beulah announced that Rob-Will would be her successor. It was a nastyy night that included a drunken Carter (jealous because Oreana was with someone else) breaking an heirloom and Beulah having a heart attack.
Now Beulah has recovered and fled the hospital with Everett …. Carter has left home … And Rip and Beth have learned of a cattle shipment linked to the dartk side of the 10 Petal. Things are about to get really serious.
