TV, we’re told, is a world where stars can come from anywhere.
Or — as Jeff Hiller put it today while announcing the Emmy nominations: “In Hollywood, talent can come in every height.”
As proof, Hiller (6-foot-5) was standing next to “Bear” co-star Liza Colon-Zayas (5-foot).
The nominations list did show that nominees can come from every size, shape and ethnicity … but not, alas, from every medium. Broadcast networks are virtually shut out from the award show they’ll air (Sept. 14 on NBC).
The exception, as usual, is ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and its star, Quinta Brunson (shown here), again nominated for best comedy series and comedy actress, other than that, streamers or cable networks have all the nominees for:
— Comedy series: “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Margo’s Got Money Trouble,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Shrinking” and “Widow’s Bay.”
— Drama series: “The Diplomat,” “The Gilded Age,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Paradise,” “The Pitt,” “Pluribus,” “Slow Horses,” “Your Friends & Neighbors.”
— Movie or mini-series: “All Her Fault,” “The Beast in Me,” “Beef,” “DTF St. Louise,” “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.”
HBO Max totaled 122 nominations, including the top totals for a drama (“The Pitt,” 25) and a comedy (the final year of “Hacks,” 24). Netflix had 111, Apple had 89 and the broadcast people werefar behind.
CBS’ big-deal, 50th “Survivor” edition did manage a reality-show nomination, as did ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” They face “Traitors,” “Top Chef” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
But mostly, broadcast doesn’t score until late-night. For variety series, there were nominations for Donald Trump’s least favorite shows — Jimmy Kimmel on ABC, “Saturday Night Live” on NBC and Stephen Colbert, who recently ended his CBS run. Also nominated were HBO’s John Oliver show and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”
The networks did manage two nominees for pre-recorded variety shows — a “Muppets” one on ABC and “Wicked” one on NBC. They faced streaming with Nikki Glaser, Dave Chappelle and Taylor Swift specials.
And broadcast did have all five nominations for live variety show — the Golden Globes (hosted by Glaser), Oscars, Tonys, Grammys and another of Trump’s dislikes, the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny.
A few new shows broke through, including the drama “Pluribus” with 18 nominations and the comedy “Widow’s Bay” for 19. The latter was part of a double day for Matthew Rhys, nominated in both “Widow’s Bay” and the movie-or-miniseries nominees “The Beast in Me.”
The list includes both super-familiar names — Sally Field, a double Oscar-winner, was nominated for her subtly perfect performance in Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures” — and near-unknowns.
That was Hiller last year, winning an Emmy at 49 for “Somebody, Somewhere.” Somewhere in Hollywood, he said today, will be another “unknown, middle-age guy” who can “walk the red carpet and be asked, ‘How did this happen?'”
ABBOTT ELEMENTARY - “Pilot” – In this workplace comedy, a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible public servants may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.
